Excellent and inspirational historical fiction set in 1935 North Carolina. A story that deals with segregation in the Jim Crow south and two kids baseball teams, one black and the other filled with young clansmen-in-training, and the generational fallout from the Civil War and the Willmington Massacre. It's truly horrific what black people had to deal with during this time, and continue to deal with, and this novel perfectly illustrates the experience of a black child in that era who just wants to play ball and be a kid amidst never-ending assault and tragedy. ~ Reviewed by Reilly Hadden

Excellent kids novel about two best friends both named Sophie. One is eleven and the other is eighty-eight. The elder Sophie is in the beginning stage of dementia and the younger Sophie is determined to somehow rescue her friend from an inevitable transition to an elder care facility. In the process of helping her friend study for cognitive exams, younger Sophie learns the history of elder Sophie's childhood in Poland and the horrors she went through during World War Two. A touching and ultimately heartwarming story that grapples with some difficult subjects masterfully. Loved it. ~ Reviewed by Reilly Hadden

An excellent piece of short fiction about the Highland Clearances, a time when landlords engaged in mass forced eviction, replacing people on their lands with more profitable sheep fields. Two wildly different men come together in unusual circumstances during this period and must live together on an isolated Scottish Island, gradually learning each other's language and becoming intensely bonded. Welsh author Carys Davies writes so beautifully and is a master of subtle emotion and atmosphere. I loved inhabiting this cold and grey island with these strange men, huddling with them by the fire. ~ Reviewed by Reilly Hadden

Newly translated, this Italian children's classic tells a heart wrenching story of a famous artist who is hired to paint the bedroom of a disabled prince. A beautiful piece of writing about friendship, mortality, the importance of stories, and the magic around us on this rock we inhabit. ~ Reviewed by Reilly Hadden
