This is the perfect book for armchair traveling. It is a treasure trove of knowledge. Miles, Director of the Oxford Archaeology unit, is also a great storyteller and naturalist. The White Horse is a 3000-year-old sculpture cut into a chalk turf hillside. The novel begins as a mystery set in the mystical English landscape of Wessex with mythic figures of dragons, Celts, Anglo-Saxons, and even Alfred the Great. Spanning centuries, the figure of the White Horse has maintained a hold on man's imagination, needing care and conservation. In this book, Miles tells the stories of how and why the Horse has persevered. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This is a brilliantly written biography and psychological study of the events of the Wars of Roses that wrought the volatile & charismatic brothers; Edward IV, George Duke of Clarence and Richard III.The Yorks created what could have been glorious dynasty but became one of the most horrific periods of regicide & fratricide It also inspired the courts of chivalry and artists such as Mallory (Le Mort d'Arthur) and Shakespeare. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

Don't squinch your face when you see this book is about the rosary. This new work by a husband and wife team is about finding a new process of meditation and prayer. Spiritual but NOT preachy, it is insightful and meaningful, delving into the lore of ancient rosary practice (before Christianity) and its value in today's chaotic times. It is also a personal story that travels through many paths on the way to an intimate understanding of Divine Feminism that two brave people chose to share with us. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This is one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read. It is luminous. Sometimes I reread a particularly beautiful paragraph because I got so lost in the construction of Williams's work I lost track of my place in the story. The metaphor of Illumination carries through in this story of the past and present in a small community in Western Ireland in the 1950s. Often the light of dark shadows is kinder than illumination and progress is not always benign, but there is usually humor. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This vivid story is about Simon Boudlin, an itinerant fiddler, who resists being conscripted in the Confederate army in the end days of the Civil War, after Appomattox. This novel is poetic, fierce, and elegant without losing the hard edge of historical facts. Like the song, "The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down," (The Band) the mournful beauty of this novel echoes the music: the two pieces feel as though they were written in 1865, and not in this century. Simply Beautiful. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
