Confronting the Classics

Beard is my favorite classicist, she approaches history with clarity but also with a sense of humor, hence Asterix and a few others make themselves known! I love this book! ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

Zealot was carefully written and researched. It’s a biography of a place and culture and of Jesus of Nazareth - the historically documented person. It is not a revisionist tract but a well-crafted analysis of the 1rst century. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
This book is haunting and beautiful. It’s a homage to Bohjalian’s ancestry and the Armenian Genocide that led into WWI. It has a lingering hold on me. I am reading Lawrence in Arabia by Scott Anderson as well and the two books blend and back each other perfectly. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
So seldom does a sequel live up to it's mate; this book does it picks up right where Wolf Hall ends. What I admire most is how Mantel speaks so convincingly in a 16th century male voice. This book also won the Man Booker Prize, another amazing achievement. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
I loved this book as a contrast to the books written about Henry the Eighth and his wives. Taken from a different point of view; by a man, Thomas Cromwell, often vilified. This book is written in a voice that is totally realistic. Winner of the Man Booker Prize. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
It is a beautifully constructed book. Elegant as well as eloquent. I think he is going to be as strong a voice as Roddy Doyle for Irish Literature. I found Ryan to be as astute and "Brilliant" as Anne Enright without the brutality and undercurrent of personal detritus. I also found Ryan's honest reflection of humanity without the Irish romanticism refreshing. The Spinning Heart speaks clearly in an Irish voice but lacks the false Irish Paddiness that is often seen as Irishness. This book made me homesick for Ireland, it's been 13 years since my last trip there. I will look forward to more of Donal Ryan eagerly. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
