Hild: A Novel (The Light of the World Trilogy) Cover Image

This gripping novel is set in 7thc. England or Angleland as this is the time of the Anglo-Saxon Kingships; a time of might over right. This book -- the 1st in a new trilogy -- is raw, often vicious and breath-taking. Griffin's writing takes the reader into the mist and the heather and smoke from long houses. This volume is about the childhood and youth of Hild, a woman destined to be "Saint Hild of Whitby." This is a graphic, sometimes brutal novelization of a truly heroic woman born in the age of swords, who is caught literally in the crossroads of Pagan Celts and Christian Aengland whose thin veneer of said Christianity is challenged by the Roman Church. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This is epic — in scale and breadth of topics. This book is a clear-eyed and well-written account of the current state of the earth and the rapid rate of extinction for many species, including the royal "we" of humanity. Many people may find this book frightening or disturbing, but I find it galvanizing, inspiring and hopeful — maybe not for the royal "we," but no matter: the earth has survived five major extinctions, and she will survive the next one as well. The 6th Extinction reads like a James Rollins or Michael Crichton novel. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

Published: William Morrow - May 13th, 2014

This is the first in a new series featuring Tucker Wayne and Kane, a former Army Ranger and his K-9 cohort, who were both involved in Signia Force's last escapade in the Eye of God, and then walked away (on good terms — I'm sure destined to reunite as solo ops).
I love these new characters: Tucker, a wonderful intuitive but still the all-american hero, and Kane, the dog (think Daniel Craig and James Bond in a dog suit). This is a great tribute to the unique relationships that exist between the members of K-9 units. Rollins' books are always based on science and a grain of truth, and here Rollins and Blackwood don't disappoint. The premise here is a pharmaceutical, Titan, missing biotech weapons and Russians — and duplicity all around. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This is a beautiful book about relationships between people, the loss of and the finding of links through words and books and the shared love of reading that can define and redefine family. I love the writing style of Williams; clean and evocative and always lyrical you can hear the lilt and tone of the Irish tongue (of not just Williams but also of his main character; Ruthie, a bedridden young woman in search of not just herself but her father and her place in family and the larger community of her village.) How Ruthie does this is through the enormous and varied collection of books that her father has left her. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

The Citadel is the final book in her Languedoc trilogy. I especially appreciate the intimacy Mosse has with the physical and spiritual landscape of the of her books. All three books in this series deal with The Cathars and the resounding conflicts that inhabit the South of France in both distant 10th -13th c and more contemporary time periods (W.W.ll and current day). the question of "...does landscape hold memory and is a person's life molded by that landscape or vice versa?" In these books you can feel the warmth of sunlight on stone and sunflowers, smell the lavender and hear the echo of ancestors lives. The other aspect I enjoy is that that you can read these books in any order. Mosse's books are full of detail and folklore but always historically based with a mystery twisted throughout the series as a link. Strong, evocative and poignant. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
