This is a story of love and betrayal, fear and faith and the strength of a woman's soul. Set in the dust of the last days of the Ottoman Empire and the rich traditions of the Yemenite Jews and the Women of the Henna House. In the tradition of The Red Tent. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

Barbor's book is an epistle. The book reads eloquently, despite horrifying stats, it is refreshing, often humorous.Simply, we have lost the taste for good food because taste has been "engineered out"; of soil and sea. He proposes an ecocentric model. I love this book for it's eloquence and texture; you retain the information good stories and recipes. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This is a memoir, though you could call it a survivors story:on many levels. Brando Skyhorse; author of the award winning " Madonnas of Echo Park" tells the story of his search to "flesh out " his own loosely drawn biography; given to him by his mother and that he finds it to be mostly lies. This is a beautifully written book that is often funny, sweet and sorrowful but always heart-felt (reminiscent of Wall's Glass Castle) Brando's voice is fragile & soft in the beginning, growing strong with painful and tender but clear eyed honesty. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This an amazing read. Melisande, daughter wife and mother of crusader knights, Melisande was actually the 2nd ruler of the Christian Kingdom of Jerusalem, ruling for over 30 years in her own right. Melisande (1105- 1161) was a woman honored and respected in her own time, forgotten only by those who came after and had to live in her shadow and by later revisionist historians. This was an incredible time of some very powerful women like Eleanor of Aquitaine, Hildegard Von Bingen and my favorite, Matilda, Countess of Canossa. This book reads like a novel,( Newman has written several historical novels but this book is wholly nonfiction! ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This is a rich, beautifully written novel of love, loss & redemption through the passion for books in general; Shakespeare in the particular. This is a tale of obsession of literary artefacts and great loves that span centuries and include real and imaginary Oxfordians and Stratfordians and their stories of funny and frightful spite and repartee. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
