This is the book I have been waiting for from Follett since Pillars of the Earth came out in 1989.
This prequel stands alone and is wonderful in its rich detail and description of life in Western Europe in the 10th century. Romance, intrigue, greed and grime abound in all their glory and grisly details when a French Norman noblewoman marries an Anglo-Saxon ealdorman. This novel spans two continents and several social hierarchies. It is the attention to historical details that make Follett's work so good. Huzzah! ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This is a lovely book that transcends art, poetry and philosophy. The poetry is to be spoken aloud but you can whisper them, and the resounding truths ring loudly. The art holds magic in each line. Blending the two together you have a beautiful gift book that a reader can savour slowly. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This wonderful novel explores so many elements of the human psyche and also the traditional myths of the First Nations Peoples; the Metis of Canada. Dark and earthy, Empire... is told by a Native artist who is a true wordsmith. Here is the story of a grief stricken woman who is haunted by her husband's disappearance twinned together with the traditional lore of the Rougarou; Werewolves and the men they haunt. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This book should be on any and every reading list, especially in this era of civil and social unrest and is a perfect pairing with books like How To be An Antiracist by Kendi or Stony the Road by Henry Louis Gates Jr. What I love about Wilkerson's book is her passion, anger, fears and her sense of justice do not cloud her journalistic abilities but are enhanced by her skills at being a storyteller and a researcher. Those passions illuminate and reverberate with the reader through her personal accounts as well as her histories of the whole concepts and misconceptions of "race". I personally think this book should be required reading for Social Services and the Police Dept. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

Alice Hoffman does not disappoint in her most recent novel. I have wanted to know Maria's story and what propelled the Owens Women's curse since 1995 when I read the first book, Practical Magic. Together with Rules of Magic the series is lushly atmospheric and satisfying. Find a comfy chair, a fire and a cat or crow and it is a perfect October read. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

Horowitz as ever is witty and wily; the master of the perfect murder mystery; the heir apparent to Agatha Christie. In Moonflower Murders Susan has been lured back to windswept England from her not-so-idyllic retreat on Crete (where we left her in Magpie Murders). Hired to solve the murder(s) at the Moonflower Hotel by finding clues within a book she edited for the irascible, troublesome and very dead Alan Conway. It is always in the details of character and events that Horowitz (or is it Conway?) shines a dark, sly gleeful light on human nature. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
