Perhaps the strangest book I’ve read this year, The Pisces is a scalding satire exploring love and obsession in the modern age. Our protagonist Lucy is a complex, disturbed, and oftentimes cruel woman desiring both genuine intimacy and sincere emotional satisfaction. The juxtaposition of true love and obsession, however, becomes quickly apparent as Lucy confuses them, resulting in heartbreak, disappointment, and an endless cycle of toxicity. Enter Theo: a mysterious swimmer who immediately captivates Lucy. As their love affair progresses, Lucy is forced to come to terms with the true nature of both Theo and herself as the story descends into a sirenic fantasy. ~ Reviewed by Madison Gallup

Kafka on the Shore is both a mind-bending coming-of-age tale of a teenage boy and the story of an aging, simple man who is drawn to him for inexplicable reasons that slowly unravel as this magical and expansive novel progresses. Murakami has crafted a dream-like excursion into the depths of consciousness as he explores themes such as fate, destiny, and subconscious desire through these exceptional characters. ~ Reviewed by Madison Gallup

My favorite romance of 2021! This is a stunning, empowering, and oftentimes hysterical grumpy+sunshine romance between two scientists at Stanford. Olive is a third year PhD student struggling to find her place in academia. Enter Adam, a reputedly arrogant professor with whom Olive has had the pleasure to have limited interactions with- until now. I loved the discussions on struggles that women in STEM face, plus the quirky banter and explosive chemistry between our two protagonists made for a 5-star read. Highly recommend! ~ Reviewed by Madison Gallup

A bleak and biting character study and exploration on food, sex, religion, and family. Our story follows Rachel, a lonely LA talent agent, who is battling an eating disorder stemming from the fatphobia she adopted from her emotionally abusive mother. When our protagonist meets Miriam, a proudly and unselfconsciously fat woman working at a yogurt shop, Rachel becomes enamored by the agency that Miriam holds. Little by little, Miriam reintroduces Rachel to the world of pleasure that she has repressed for so long. Unflinching and unhinged, Milk Fed is a provocative study on liberation and desire. ~ Reviewed by Madison Gallup

The blueprint for gothic horror, Haunting of Hill House remains one of the most atmospheric and influential classics. Our story begins when an occult scholar gathers a peculiar group of individuals to a supposed haunted house in search for definitive proof of the supernatural. Provoking a sense of dread and claustrophobia, the reader is trapped both in the mind of our unreliable protagonist and the nightmarish house alike until the final unforgettable pages of this cyclical narrative. ~ Reviewed by Madison Gallup
