"I grieve that grief can teach me nothing, nor carry me one step into real nature. " - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Santlofer speaks of grief as a series of details preceding and trailing behind the sudden death of his wife. It does not read as a heinously uplifting account of the ways grief can inspire and better ourselves; it is instead like a conversation with a friend who knows exactly what you are going through. ~ Reviewed by Katelynne Shimkus

Brace for impact. The first sentence of this collection is terrifying and powerful, and it does not let up from there. Adjei-Brenyah is a Category 3 force and he's only going to get bigger. Rabid fans of Her Body and Other Parties will find its worthy successor here. ~ Reviewed by Katelynne Shimkus

Deeply Grateful & Entirely Unsatisfied by Amanda Happe - Book Review

Did you know that if you soak a raisin in water, it will swell up again? It won't be a grape necessarily, but it will definitely be better than a raisin. This book is water to soak in. ~ Reviewed by Katelynne Shimkus

Tolkien once wrote that stories, even fairy-tales, shouldn't be dumbed down for children, because they too face the difficult world we live in. McGuire's story is wonderous and ominous, following an capable but ordinary heroine as she navigates the world of the Market, our own world, and growing up from 6 to 17. Dark, feminist, bibliophilic, bildungsroman, ambiguously unresolved - this book checks all my favorite boxes.
(Also, I was unaware that this book was part of a series until I wrote this review, so don't be worried by the "#4" - it's perfectly standalone.) ~ Reviewed by Katelynne Shimkus

I didn't know how much I needed this book. I ADORED How to Build a Girl and was content to release Joanna into the wild of her infinite future in London, but I am so pleased to see this next chapter in her life. In fact, I started off the book scared that it wouldn't be as good, but as soon as we got into the bad sex (the kind that every woman can recognize) practically opening the story, I knew my gal was there for me.
No longer in Wolverhampton, Joanna Morrigan (nom de plume Dolly Wilde) has escaped to London, where she has her own room, her own dog, her own column in a music magazine, her own true (unrequited) love, her own seething ex, her own drink at the local pub...and frankly, she's on her own in life. Because things are starting to seem tipped in the favor of blokes. And "nobly suffering through it" is a crap option. What's a Lady Sex Adventurer to do? (Trust me, you want to find out). ~ Reviewed by Katelynne Shimkus

In my line of work I read a lot of books. And most of them are good. But I, like all of us, live for the literature that reminds me that writing can be astounding. Stories tickles the little-used ventricle in my heart that is simultaneously in love with both science and literature, using narrative and mathematics and linguistics and physics and neuroscience to achieve a perfect golden spiral. ~ Reviewed by Katelynne Shimkus
