Where do writers get their ideas from? Julia Alvarez engages the muse for this story from an historical account of an expedition to save the world from smallpox. She weaves a modern story with some parallel themes into the adventure saga of the past which is rich with character and humanistic purpose. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

A gentle, yet intense fictional memoir about a young girl raised by her uncle who happens to be a Catholic priest. This is a very timely look at the other side of the "priest issue". I was so impressed by the author's understated attention to the themes of unconditional love, faith of all kinds, as well as sacrifice and redemption all wrapped up in a story which moved forward briskly and resolved itself in an interesting way. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

This is an important and immensely readable biography of Florence Nightingale. It is told, in large part, from the point of view of her family. There is a great wealth of information here as well a sharp historical perspective. The author gives readers new insight, by some cleverly disguised psychological profiling, into the stunning achievements of this great humanitarian and allows us to understand the woman behind the heroine. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

The tale of two adventurous women who undertake a quest to unlock the mysteries of Easter Island by a study of the plant life and distribution of seeds. Although their stories take place at different times in history (one in 1913 and the other in 1970) the plot weaves them together in fascinating ways and we come to understand and care deeply about the outcome of their intellectual and emotional journeys. As in most quests, it becomes evident that the voyage is more important than the destination. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank
