This beautiful book from Timber Press is subtitled An American Potager Handbook. This is a phrase just entering the lexicon of American gardeners, essentially meaning "kitchen garden". The idea that one should incorporate fresh vegetables and herbs into the overall design of your garden property and send it to your dining table is a welcome and refreshing trend. The author has been inspired by the traditional potager of France and has set out to convert us all. I was captivated by this line: "The potager is not just a kitchen garden, it is a philosophy of living that is connected to the garden and the seasons with the goal of harvesting a variety of fresh herbs, fruits, flowers, and vegetables throughout the growing season. This is what I call the American Potager." ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

The $64 Tomato

Even though you may not have the same financial resources to feed your gardening obsession, you will laugh out loud and shake your head at the author's wisdom and whimsy. Anyone who tries to grow beautiful and wholesome food in our Northeastern climate will empathize with the trials and tribulations (and cost!) associated with organic gardening. This book reads like a novel, with many witty observations about hard lessons learned and monumental (though hard-won) rewards. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank
