This is wonderful historical fiction! In 1950's Newfoundland, a way of life for generations of fishermen is being replaced by government (Canadian) re-organization and relocation of the sparse and hardy populace. A young couple who are each a bit different from the rest of the villagers, find love, loss and ultimately peace. This is the third novel by Donna Morrissey. Downhill Chance and Kit's Law. All are set in Newfoundland and are beautifully written. Her novels are full of a strong sense of time and place with finely drawn characters and emotional impact. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

A compelling tale of a Newfoundland fishing village from the 1940's through the end of WWII. The characters inhabit a world that more resembles the early 19th century than the 20th, and their joys and sorrows have a poignancy and historical atmosphere of a different time. One reviewer goes so far as to describes the author as "a Newfoundland Thomas Hardy", which is high praise, as far as I'm concerned, as well as being accurate. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

A lovely and life affirming story suitable for young adult and up. A thirteen year old boy, who is small for his age, lives on the tidal flats of Puget Sound. The dysfunctional marriage of his parents has made him a loner and a seeker and he is obsessed with the rich marine life of this backyard science laboratory. In the time frame of the story he discovers marvels about the sea, the planet, humankind and himself. This is a beautifully written and thought provoking tale about our relationship with the natural world and how to find a place in it, as well as connect with our fellow humans. A great novel. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

I chose this book as a gentle and light read and became very involved emotionally. The characters and the situation blossomed and became very intricate. This book is so much more than it first appears to be. I was impressed and enthralled. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

Soft and misty with gentle characters, life in this novel moves at a different pace in rural, modern Ireland. I loved the dream-like atmosphere which cloaked the real human issues. Relaxing and genuine. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

This is a psychological mystery which I found impossible to put down. Even though I don't normally read this type of book, I found myself hooked, horrified and helpless. You should be prepared to give up a few nights worth of sleep because you will want to keep reading. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank
