This is memoir writing at its very best. I laughed, I cried, I marveled at the wonderful writing and I became completely engaged with each character. Mr. Moehringer has written a great book which deserves to stand with other American literature to be enjoyed not only for the poignant story but for the life lessons it teaches and the fine craftmanship of the writing. EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK! ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

A reprint of a wonderful novel from 1965. I read it in one sitting and found it beautiful and intensely moving. It is a story bursting with heart and intelligence expertly written. A young man from a poor farming family is sent to university by his father in the early 20th century to learn new agricultural science. Knowing what a hardship it was for his family to scrape up the tuition as well as lose their only farmhand, he dutifully tries to apply himself. Somewhere along the way he discovers literature and the life of the mind and abandons his family, eventually becoming a professor himself. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

If you find yourself yearning for the days when you first read the great 19th century authors, you will want to immerse yourself in this story. I suppose if there are women out there who are still looking for their soul mate, they will be able to take heart in the poignant and expertly rendered tale of Lydian Jackson Emerson and the great intellectual and emotional fever that infected both men and women of the time. Absolutely stunning historical fiction. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

Yankee Magazine's Pantyhose, Hot Peppers, Tea Bags, and More-for the Garden

I picked this book up for the title and as soon as I started paging through it I was hooked. There are so many great ideas for "seat of the pants" gardeners like me! Informative, ingenious and incredible...this book has given me new inspiration to get back out there. It has also validated my pack-rat tendency to save any and all containers, string and broken stuff that I "may find a use for someday". ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

Winner of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

The backstory never revealed in Little Women. What did Daddy do during the war? The exploits of Mr. March (loosely based on the historical figure of Bronson Alcott), father of Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy and husband of Marmee, as he fills in information from his past life and writes letters home from the Civil War . A radical abolitionist minister, March attempts to make sense of the relationship between his ideals and the harsh reality as well as come to grips with the strong women in his family.
