An important side of history we hardly learn about brought to life. Abbott's accounts of four courageous spies, soldiers, and couriers read like novels and remind us that women, while scarcely accounted for, played a significant role in our nation's history. ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon

Well-researched, with a convincing voice that brings all the uncertainty of 1600's New England, unforgiving Puritan standards, and the vulnerability of two clashing cultures to the forefront. An important retelling of a dark period of American history - not to mention it's an INCREDIBLE story! Highly recommend! ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon

An initially heartbreaking but completely uplifting story of how a young boy with a rare genetic disorder and a dog who nearly lost his life when he was tied to active railroad tracks rally together and overcome the odds against them. Holden's research on both Little B's condition and the devastating statistics of animal cruelty are tastefully presented and include opportunities for readers to become involved in the organizations that help disabled humans and animals thrive. ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon

I never would have picked this novel up if I hadn't been complaining to one of our publisher reps that I hadn't read a good book in a long time. They all had the same feel and were predictable and I was just plain bored despite the plethora of books I devoured, I said, so he asked if I trusted him to give me an unique debut novel - he wouldn't tell me what it was about, but said I wouldn't be disappointed.

He was right.

"The Quick," which I admit has a slow start, is a refreshing change of pace that puts a new spin on old legends. James, a young poet/playwright, inadvertently becomes entwined with the exclusive and highly ambitious Aegolius Club, whose members' intentions have taken a turn to the sinister in hopes of redefining power in London. James' sister Charlotte becomes concerned when his regular letters stop so she travels unaccompanied to London. What Charlotte finds when she arrives is far from what she expected and pushes her to her ethical and physical limits as she tries, desperately and at great risk, to reclaim the brother she loves. ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon

For fans of The Bell Jar comes a fictional account of Ruth, a "green girl" in England, who is desperately striving to escape the infuriating monotony of her job as a perfume saleswoman and shed the cloak of invisibility donned by all foreigners while trying to navigate her way through that sometimes glorious - but mostly painful - period between being a teenager and an adult. Ruth's story is one of acceptance and turmoil, of how the drone of everyday life becomes nauseating and unbearable, a story of autonomy and love and sex and drugs and petty girls and scheming boys and life abroad and being noticed for all the wrong reasons and friendship and heartache and consumerist culture and the art of the sale and tourism and how to stretch every last dollar and everything else that makes being a "green girl" so maddening. Ruth herself is a character that nearly every woman - and probably most men - can identify with as life with all its quirks becomes too overwhelming to keep up with and the desperation that follows. I found myself cheering her on, scolding her, being embarrassed for her, hating her, and loving her... and wanting to share her story with everyone I know. ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon
