Love and magic run rampant in the small town of Fair Hollow, a small village on the Hudson where Serefina and her father hope for a new start. "Finn" finds herself perplexed by the less charming than mysterious village and enchanted by Jack Fata, whose family is known for their wealth, strange powers, and inexplicable attraction to Finn. Reminiscent of the movie "Hocus Pocus" but with a much, much darker story underneath. ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon

I never would have picked this novel up if I hadn't been complaining to one of our publisher reps that I hadn't read a good book in a long time. They all had the same feel and were predictable and I was just plain bored despite the plethora of books I devoured, I said, so he asked if I trusted him to give me an unique debut novel - he wouldn't tell me what it was about, but said I wouldn't be disappointed.

He was right.

"The Quick," which I admit has a slow start, is a refreshing change of pace that puts a new spin on old legends. James, a young poet/playwright, inadvertently becomes entwined with the exclusive and highly ambitious Aegolius Club, whose members' intentions have taken a turn to the sinister in hopes of redefining power in London. James' sister Charlotte becomes concerned when his regular letters stop so she travels unaccompanied to London. What Charlotte finds when she arrives is far from what she expected and pushes her to her ethical and physical limits as she tries, desperately and at great risk, to reclaim the brother she loves. ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon

A complex debut that demands your attention cover to cover. Urquhart's unflinching approach to the human condition and the unknown side of Shaker life in the 1800s will give you an experience you won't soon forget. A page-turner in every sense of the term and highly recommended. ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon

Reading this book confirmed that I need to be best friends with Poehler - she’s worked hard to get where she is and doesn’t take it for granted. Full of testimonials about Poehler’s work ethic, comedic genius, and her “what you see is what you get” attitude, Yes Please is for her fans who want a laugh out loud read. ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon

A real gem of a novel that is every bit beautiful as the cover and very difficult to put down. Each character has lost something important; a lover, their office building, a wall, sense of direction, piano keys. A little boy named Jake is able to forge a connection with lost objects, but, unbeknownst to him, is also losing his most precious connection. The magic of Matthewson's debut is so multi-faceted, so original, and so engaging it's a breath of fresh air for the fiction world. Very highly recommended! ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon

A cow, a pig, and a turkey walk out of the barnyard and into the world. No, really.

Elsie Bovary, Jerry - sorry, that's now Shalom (he's recently converted to Judaism) - the Pig, and Tom the Turkey make a mad dash for freedom after Elsie learns about industrial meat farming. This is an oddly satisfying story that drives home the point that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. ~ Reviewed by Jess Hanlon
