A much more poetic story than other books by dePaola. There is no question that the illustrations are typical dePaola. The Fog Maiden image at the end perhaps the best part of the story. You see her moving even though there is obviously no motion to the page. This and other fun parts show how everyday items can be magical or can take on a life of their own. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

A typical teen story with humor, caring, really bad home-made movies, selfishness, family dynamics (no matter how crazy they are), friendship and even some homework. There is not a lot of traditional action, because it is more about Greg (or “Me”) telling about the few months he had to befriend Rachel (“Dying Girl”) because once they were friends in Hebrew school and now that she's dying their mothers think it is a good idea. And Earl? Well, he’s just Earl who does not have a lot to say, but when he does, it is a punch in the gut. Sometimes, literally. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Each poem is graceful, lumpy, impossible to understand and easy to read. Like all poetry, you get out of it what you put into it. With a sophisticated theme and language this is not for the casual poetry reader and even a more experienced reader might find it challenging but ultimately rewarding. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Davies beautifully blends a story and hummingbird facts seamlessly. You see how a bird (that is born in an egg the size of half a walnut shell) can fly from the southern hemisphere all the way to the Canadian border. We see how a hummingbird lands in the garden of a grandmother and her granddaughter and finds its way to New York and in a full-circle finds that little girl again. Through people and places the story unfolds as we learn about a bird that we usually only think of as “just pretty.” And, we learn stories about the people encountered along the way. Fantastically amazing illustrations that are frameable artwork. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

This is a simple, realistic and just overall nice story about friendship. The authors afterwards detailing their own experience was a surprising, but welcomed, touch. And while it is a graphic novel, it reads like a novel. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Ophelia by Charlotte Gingras - Book Review

Gingras brings out emotions of love, hate, disgust and so much more in this translation of her book. You will root for and even against our heroine Ophelia. You will love the language of the text and cringe at what is going on around the characters. Ophelia is a typical teen who is learning, growing, trying to hide and trying to find herself. The art work adds to the emotional tugging due to the graffiti like images, the realism and absolute surreal-abstractness all rolled into one. Sylvestre compliments the sometimes sensual and sometimes crude text with equally sensual and crude art. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette
