Dystopian, off-kilter, delightfully strange. Attempting to capture the premise of this experimental novel would be a disservice to its many faces, but I'll try - here Williams imagines a future after the death of Earth, investigating a wide range of characters, including a ten-year-old judge, a teenager who may or may not have died as a infant, and a team of geriatric ecoterrorists. This book is death-haunted and often cruelly bleak in its take on our collective future, but Williams's bitter humor and masterful prose make it well worth the existential headache. ~ Reviewed by Gwyn Sise

"I believe that any experience, whatever its nature, has the inalienable right to be chronicled," muses Ernaux during one of the more intimate moments in this honest and harrowing account of the illegal abortion she had in 1963, written some forty years later. Regarded as a feminist touchstone by many, Happening does not hold back - Ernaux excels, as in her other works, at sifting through her own memories to produce something tactile, intense, and transformative. ~ Reviewed by Gwyn Sise
