15-year-old Hanneke is exposed to the atrocities of 1943 Nazi occupied Amsterdam when asked to help find a Jewish girl who has left her hiding place. Hard choices and cruel circumstances fill each and every page. All the tension made it impossible for me to put this down. Fantastic details and great historical references. ~ Reviewed by Gail Cosgriff

Lots and lots of issues in this realistic fiction that centers around Macy, a soon-to-be twelve-year-old who refuses to celebrate her upcoming birthday until Iraqi war veteran dad comes home from his post war "special assignment." So well done, from character development to issue resolution. Emotional exchanges with adults and determined pre-adolescents. Highly recommend for the older middle reader. ~ Reviewed by Gail Cosgriff

Eleven-year-old Naomi "Chirp" is in love with life, her family, and all the wild birds that surround her home on Cape Cod. She is adored by mom and dad and has a fun relationship with her older sister. Then mom becomes critically ill and Chirp's world spirals out of control. No amount of love and understanding can protect her from devastating heartache and despair. Set in the early 70's, Ehrlich brilliantly references the social and political climate as well as music and entertainment highlights. A beautifully written, raw emotional read that now tops my "Favorites" list. ~ Reviewed by Gail Cosgriff
