There is an extraordinary contrast between Zhang's beautiful, poetic writing style and her damaged, maddening characters. Yet even when I found it hard to empathize with "Junie and Micha, Micah and Junie" and especially when I was wrestling with the heavy subject of date rape, I kept reading. I had to know how it would end! And when it did...I instantly understood why Zhang used several Virginia Wolfe quotes throughout her complicated tale. No regrets reading this, but so many questions remain. ~ Reviewed by Gail Cosgriff

Absolutely, hands down, the best read of my year! I was just blown away by Challenger Deep. I was a little frustrated and confused in the beginning, no doubt intended by Shusterman, but was soon on a journey that had me hiccuping from all the emotional twists. Funny at times, frightening always with searing heartbreak that is permanent. To understand the devastation the diagnosis paranoid schizophrenia has on its victim and family, read this. You'll never feel the same about mental illness again. ~ Reviewed by Gail Cosgriff

Mira, Sebby and Jeremy are a trainwreck trio but each is lovable and most importantly, believable. Issues abound: Mira is healing from a suicide attempt and chronic depression; Sebby is a teen in foster care, openly gay and horribly self-destructive; sweet Jeremy, also gay, is looking for someone he can trust. Three different points of view, three different tenses. I really enjoyed this, but it is clearly written for the older teen. Peppered throughout with sex and drug use. ~ Reviewed by Gail Cosgriff

It's 1942, Pearl Harbor has been attacked and thousands of Japanese Americans are being retained in prison camps. Paper Wishes is about one family's struggle and the devastating impact it has on 10-year-old Manami after she's forced to give up everything she's ever known, including the family dog. I found this book excruciatingly difficult to read at times because it was so heartbreaking, however - this is a must read for all ages. ~ Reviewed by Gail Cosgriff
