A gorgeous, coming of age tale set in Nepal. Twelve-year-old Nandu lives and works side-by-side his adoptive father training the elephants in the King's stable. When corruption and greed forces the stables to close, Nandu pours his hearth and energy into saving the only life he's ever known. This will make a great read-aloud with countless opportunities to introduce or expand upon geography, culture, and the social behavior of elephants. ~ Reviewed by Gail Cosgriff
Alyan instantly had my attention and often my breath with her story of the Palestinian wars and the displacement of families over the past 60 years. Told from the perspective of each family member, spanning three generations. Spot on mother-daughter struggles that were frighteningly easy to relate to. Loved every word. A new favorite! ~ Reviewed by Gail Cosgriff
