A coming of age story, but so much more - an invitation to live in the hearts of four teens in a blue-collar town in the late 1960s. The writing is spare yet evocative, brimming with touchstones that evoke the common threads of experience running through us all. Highest recommendation. ~ Reviewed by Erik Barnum

To my mind, this is Norman Mailer's masterpiece. This slim book holds within it's pages one of the most exciting narratives I've ever read, depicting the 1974 fight between underdog Muhammad Ali, trying to regain his heavyweight title, and the Godzilla monster that was George Foreman. The build-up, the fight and its aftermath are all depicted with edge-of-the-seat prose that is infectious and will have you breathless even if you already know the conclusion. ~ Reviewed by Erik Barnum

An extraordinarily powerful and surprising memoir from the author of one of my favorite novels, Mr. Pip. This New Zealand writer has many literary awards under his belt, but the story of his life may be his best narrative yet. Mr. Jones deftly pieces together a family mystery whose denouement is devastating. The writing is superb, elegant and concise. Highly recommended. ~ Reviewed by Erik Barnum

Matt Taibbi's knowledge and take-no-prisoners attitude is enormously refreshing in this age of political correctness. His new book is a dire call to arms, as he takes on the new system of justice in America between the untouchable wealthy and the criminalized poor. This is a frightening and important work about the abuses and inherent unfairness that Taibbi sees as evolving into a warped dissolution of civil rights in this country. ~ Reviewed by Erik Barnum

This is the story of John Brown as told through the eyes of a young boy who is taken in by Brown after his father is killed. McBride's plot and the evocation of the time and place of this novel is extraordinary, and his portrait of John Brown is both flamboyant and in a strange way reverential. Brown comes across as a single minded fanatic, not quite mad but not entirely sane either. A terrifically engrossing read. Highly recommended. ~ Reviewed by Erik Barnum
