I'm in love with the protagonist, Maggie, a naive, ambitious, & funny young girl who is entering middle school with ambitions to become the next president of the United States. At school, when she finds herself alone at the lunch table, she isn't at all anxious; instead, she takes out her class syllabus and marks due dates on her calendar with each class marked in a corresponding color. At home, Maggie doesn't always get along with her "girly" older sister, but her family is tight-knit and supportive. Maggie's father, has a wheelchair, sharp wit, and a knowledge of all things "cool," including vinyl records. As Maggie learns that her father's disability is more serious than she imagined, she feels the first pangs of understanding that her parents are fallible mortal beings. Instead of fearing the worst, Maggie is empowered with a fiercer, empathetic love. ~ Reviewed by Bonnie Winchester

The YA novel "Say What You Will" by Cammie McGovern features a young girl, who is nonverbal & communicates through a computer, who falls in love with a young boy, who has OCD to the point that he taps lockers, counts classroom chairs, & checks faucets after repeatedly washing his hands. If you liked The Fault in Our Stars, try this new realistic fiction featuring star-crossed lovers, who make tough choices as they find their place in society.

Spoiler alert: This tale shows the unintended consequences of stereotyping, underaged drinking, and unplanned pregnancy. Both protagonists survive, but the ending isn't neatly tied up with a cinematic "happily-ever-after." ~ Reviewed by Bonnie Winchester

A retired English teacher returns to a rural Vermont classroom for a one-year substituting gig. He must find footing on a new educational landscape where a former student is now his principal, classics are pulled from library shelves, research projects are completed online, and a chalkboard is supplemented with an overhead projector. My teaching colleagues and I identified with this humorous memoir, particularly Keizer's anxiety over his students' need for reading support when "they are only two years away from voting" and his "hopes to live out his remaining years in a democracy." ~ Reviewed by Bonnie Winchester

Beah poetically captures the possibilities of rebuilding a community after heart-breaking tragedy. In this novel, he imagines what could happen to a village in western Africa after genocide. Included in this portrait are a wide range of thoughtfully-rendered characters, including a former child soldier and village elders. ~ Reviewed by Bonnie Winchester
