A book of voices, past, present, and mythical that inhabit a small country village, and the air fills with them when a small boy goes missing. The boy is completely in sync with the wild nature of his surroundings and mischievous as he is, may have awakened the ancient spirit of Dead Papa Toothwort. Through this setting Porter explores the human psyche and how the collective voice in a society can run riot and whispers can run like brush fires. And, just as powerfully, the visual way some of the verses throughout the book are displayed adds to the novel in a unique and satisfying way. I loved this book deeply and highly recommend. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

Jamie has the most gloriously poetic way of writing, and her books are a constant joy for it. In Surfacing, she takes us to archaeological digs in Orkney and Alaska, with some absolutely stunning nature writing, as well as essays about living in what Jamie calls her “late middle age.” Dealing with the death of her Father, and her own cancer diagnosis, she writes about the layers of memories, experiences and history, connecting the essays in a subtle, cumulative way. Her description of an eagle in flight is worth the price of admission alone, a stunning collection of work. Highly Recommend. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

Along the River Thames, small strips of sandy beaches can be found, quiet places just a step away from the busy city, and the treasures they hold are slowly being revealed to a small set of people. Today, you need a licence to be a “mudlarker”, but once you just needed to be a child poor enough to scavenge, and the name comes from those desperate Victorian children. Maiklem has been one of the modern day treasure seekers for over 15 years, and she has many stories to fill the pages of this lovely memoir, and finds that the tiniest objects can tell the best stories, while quietly discovering London’s history and secrets in one of it’s more unique edgelands. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

A haunting and evocative memoir that grips your hand and pulls you through the depths of Turner’s emotions, totally absorbing. He finds himself, after the abrupt end of a defining relationship, once again questioning his place in the world as a bisexual man, especially one
that is further complicated by religion, and revisiting his feelings of guilt and shame. He turns to Epping Forest, once a place of solace and safety, only to find parallels with his own struggle. A beautiful book about coming to peace with oneself, and the places that may help you may find it. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

What do we know about the Fox?
Fox is a creature that has lived along side us for as long as we can remember, not only in our backyards, but in our myths and stories. Both beloved and mistrusted, both cute woodland animal and evil trickster, our relationship, though long, has been complicated. In this wonderful book, ecologist Adele Brand brings us the truth about this beautiful mammal, dispelling many myths along the way. She paints us a full picture of this iconic edgeland dweller, its habits, relationships, and its ability to adapt successfully to our ever changing environment. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a curiosity for foxes, wildlife and nature. A wonderful addition to the genre. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty
