"All our lives have one day circled when we will be rubbed out. It's a good thing not to know the date. But probably no one would think it would happen like this." On the other side of the wall are many devilish things--but Standish Treadwell knows the truth. Condemned to live in Zone 7 of the Motherland--a hair away from the ghettos of Nazi Germany--Standish, his Gramps, and their new fugitive neighbors barely survive while the government obsesses over their ongoing mission to the moon. Intelligent, harrowing, and tragic, Maggot Moon delivers a story that does not rewrite the fascist regimes of World War II, but gives voice to another which could happen--regardless of place--at any point in the trajectory of human existence. Destined to be a classic in the tradition of Clockwork Orange, 1984, and The Book Thief, Gardner's story of 100 short, bold chapters will be one you read straight-through without stopping. A perfect book. ~ Reviewed by Aubrey Restifo

Perhaps one of the only young adult novels involving gay teens that is not a coming out story, Gone Gone Gone follows Craig and Lio as they fall in love in D.C. during the Beltway Sniper shootings of 2002. Satisfyingly understated and sweet, this novel manages to be tragic and romantic without harping on the sexual orientation of its characters. A lovely read, despite the post-9/11 chaos. ~ Reviewed by Aubrey Restifo

Weird and glorious, hilarious and devastating, this novel carries a literary punch more hefty than that of any other YA book I've read. Whaley's story follows two brothers, a missionary, and two teens struggling into their twenties: stuck in a small town, they navigate adulthood amidst the absurdity of the appearance of a once-extinct bird as well as the disappearance--and probable kidnapping--of the main character's beloved teen brother. This book manages to be upsetting to the point of hopeful; painfully real, totally believable, and one you’ll read again upon finishing the final passage. A stunning debut. ~ Reviewed by Aubrey Restifo
