Jean McConville was "disappeared" from her modest apartment in Belfast in December of 1972. Recently widowed, she left ten children to fend for themselves at a time when what was euphemistically called the "Troubles" turned Northern Ireland into a virtual war zone. Keefe has written a meticulously researched history of the bloody conflict between England, a country that seems particularly slow to recognize when it has worn out its welcome, and ferociously dedicated members of the IRA, who are determined to drive the British out. Cruelty, brutality, and murder was prevalent on both sides, leaving scars across the tortured land that still fester today. This is a brilliant book about a very dark interlude in human history when, literally, the only way to survive was to say nothing. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves

A woman, living blissfully alone in a mountainous, remote part of Poland, purports that a string of sudden deaths in the area is the deliberate work of animals getting even with mankind for the abuses they have suffered. She bolsters her conclusion by pointing out to anyone who will listen that the planets were aligned to predict the demise of the victims. Local skepticism is palpable. Despite the rather grim title, this novel by a recent recipient of the Nobel Prize, is uplifting and delightful and the lady with the unique perspective on crime is one of the most endearing characters in contemporary literature. I loved every snow-swept moment. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves

Stephen Doyle is a veteran of the American Civil War. His single-minded ruthlessness makes him the perfect person to hire to avenge the execution of three members of the Fenian Brotherhood, an organization determined to drive the British out of Ireland. James O'Connor is the Head Constable in Manchester. Recently transferred from Dublin, he is a man haunted by the loss of his wife and battling a constant urge to return to the mind-numbing comfort of alcohol. Both men, in very different ways, are driven by obsessions; one to make sure a terrible revenge is exacted, the other to stop him. This dark and mesmerizing novel, with its deeply flawed, brilliantly drawn protagonists, is as compulsively readable as the author's previous work, The North Water, and there is hardly any higher praise. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves

A memorable cast of characters with equally memorable names like Sportcoat, Sister Gee, Elephant, Four Pie Lady, and Sausage inhabit this Damon Runyonesque story of life in a Brooklyn housing project. A series of momentous events unfold after Sportcoat, in an alcoholic stupor, shoots the ear off a local drug dealer, a kid who used to be the star player on the baseball team he coached. McBride effortlessly spans the cavern between some of the most serious issues confronting urban America and humor that sometimes approaches a slapstick level. The new book by the author of The Good Lord Bird is infused with a zest for life that is exhilarating, suspenseful, and completely delightful. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves

An older woman, recently widowed, finds an intriguing note on her morning walk suggesting that a murder has been committed. Slowly and almost insidiously, the implications of the short note begin to subsume her, awakening a painful realization of the anger and disappointment that she has managed to suppress throughout her own life. This is a hypnotic, brilliantly executed journey into a troubled mind that draws the reader into its spell like a specter beckoning a traveler into the flickering twilight. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves

With her gleaming white superstructure, jet black hull, and canted funnel sporting the national colors, the Italian liner Andrea Doria was the most strikingly beautiful of the postwar transatlantic passenger vessels. On July 25, 1956 she collided with Stockholm, a Swedish motorship in a dense fog off Nantucket. The reinforced bow of the Stockholm penetrated 40 feet into the Doria's starboard side, cutting a swath of destruction and death and inflicting a mortal wound. This is a meticulous account of the liner's last hours and of the largest sea rescue in peacetime history. Harrowing, tense, and memorable. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves
