When I moved from Spain to the United States, this is the book that was given to me as a reference of plain old good food. My mother gave me this book so that I would have all the basic Spanish recipes, from paella to flan, to tortilla de patatas, arroz con leche, and so forth. This book is really an encyclopedia, a great reference book for those who want to learn to make scrumptious traditional recipes from Spain. ¡Buen provecho! ~ Reviewed by Adriana Gómez Piccolo

I believe this book might have been the reason why I love non-fiction. This was a suggested reading at school and teachers were really surprised we students enjoyed it so much. As a teenager, it was an amazing experience to read the real story of a sailor who survived 10 days at sea after a shipwreck. One of the most shocking accounts is when he kills a seagull, intending to eat it. Nonetheless, that is just one of the many moments that are quite heart wrenching in this book. You really feel you are out at sea with the sailor, experiencing the same emotions. Prepare to feel thirsty, hungry and just plain exhausted. ~ Reviewed by Adriana Gómez Piccolo

This collection of legends and poetry is a classic in Spain that you read in on your teenage years. If you read it as an adult you may be surprised that you liked it so much when you were younger, as it could be considered a little clichéd. However, for many Spaniards, it’s their first introduction to poetry as it was in my case. As for the legends part of it, I always remember being fascinated by the story of a man who gets locked inside the cathedral of Toledo at night. I think that story might be the reason why I don’t like to be alone with religious statues. This book is a great Romantic introduction to poetry and fiction. ~ Reviewed by Adriana Gómez Piccolo
