An eye-opening and heartbreaking story about a wealthy boy's friendship with the son of his father's servant, this novel will leave you staring at the pages in shock and saying to yourself, "That did not just happen." Set in late 20th Century Afghanistan during the time of Soviet Invasion and the fleeing of refugees to the US, we see the lives of these two boys unfold before us as love, betrayal, and devastation rain upon their lives. A wonderfully written book, Hosseini truly captures the emotions of each character and brings them all to life as well as depicts the true horrors of war and the pain it bestows upon a population. ~ Reviewed by Adelia Callear
This novel is my favorite book from 2020, possibly even from the past few years. An emotional and plot twist roller coaster, this novel takes you through the mind games of Tobias Hawthorne, a billionaire who left his fortune to Avery Grambs. A girl who comes from nothing with nothing but her half sister and her best friend, Avery as well as the Hawthorne family have no idea why she was written into Tobias's will. Her and the four Hawthorne grandsons delve into the secrets of their grandfather in an attempt to discover what his true intentions were. Filled with love triangles, distrust, and several murder attempts, Barnes has created a true literary masterpiece. ~ Reviewed by Adelia Callear
Phoebe Bennet has had a crush on Luke Taylor since the dawn of time it seems; Luke just broke up with his long-term high school sweetheart. When the two attend the same college together, love and school get very complicated. Sweet and funny, this novel is an adorable YA romance perfect for a quick weekend read. The third addition to her famous Red Queen series, Aveyard keeps her fans on their toes. Mare is captured by King Maven and his array of followers, trapped behind his walls and locked in his twisted hold. While she observes the tested alliances and a couple assassination attempts, her band of rebels, the Scarlet Guard, grows in size and strength. Constantly moving plot, you won't want to put this book down. True character personalities are shown and betrayal becomes something of a pastime. Will Mare escape Maven’s possessive grip and gain back her powers or will the king finally overthrow the force threatening to destroy his world? No, this book is not about the infamous COVID-19, but the story is still worth the read. Flora and Oliver meet on a plane trip back from the Dominican Republic where there has been a reported case of “Tropical Mono.” The whole flight must go into a 24 hour quarantine, which is where Flora and Oliver connect and become friends. Driven by the desire not to go home yet, Flora fakes a fever then kisses Oliver, sending them both into a 30-day quarantine together. Filled with bad yet still funny dad jokes, flirting, love triangles, and parts where I was ripping my hair out (the dramatic irony is strong and lovably frustrating), this novel is a fast yet heartwarming read. ~ Reviewed by Adelia Callear
