Join us at Northshire to celebrate the life and work of poet Mary Oliver as we host a Pop-Up Poetry Salon in her honor. Attendees can read a poem of hers, speak about her influence, or, if the muse strikes, write their own elegy.
Mary Oliver’s death launched an outpouring of tributes and laments from many sources of news, social media, and from people in all walks of life. We would have wanted to have had her for a few more years, gifting us with more of her poems, but she had a profound sense of life’s perfection in all its endings, her own included. In every tribute and obituary there was a sense of pure gratitude, the heart’s celebration we had her in our world for as long as we did, and how her body of poetry continues its lucid rambles through our lives. Please bring a poem of hers that changed or saved your life, one where you come home to yourself again and again, led with light and beauty. You are invited to share your story of how Mary Oliver’s poetry entered your life, and your own elegies and poems for her are welcome, too.
There will be a reception to follow. Wine and beverages will be provided, and if you can bring something to share, in the Poetry Salon tradition, it will be greatly appreciated. Celebrations of life throughout the world need to share food and drink. It’s a time to open the convivial part of ourselves to talk about our lives, our poetry, and their union. Mary Oliver said, “Poetry wishes for a community.” And so we shall give it one she would enjoy.
