Author and art collector Mari Shaw celebrates the release of her book "The Noble Art of Collecting: The Word, the Book, and the Spaces They Inhabit" in conversation with Anthony Allen, Director of the Paula Cooper Gallery.

With examples of unexpected collectors and serendipitous consequences, Shaw investigates the obscure desires that shape art collectign and the public goodwill that results from it. What was lost when the scrolls in the ancient library of Alexandria were destroyed? How did Catherine the Great's collecting change the way we think?

Mari Shaw, author of Painter and Pataphysician Thomas Chimes, is an intellectual property lawyer and storyteller who lives in Philadelphia and Berlin. Shaw has organized projects with artists Candida Hofer and Anri Sala, and has taught at the University of Pennsylvania. She has served on boards and advisory committees for documenta 12, The Galelries of the Moore College of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin Law School and the Wilma Theater. She and her husband, Peter, have been collecting art for thirty-five years.
