In July of 1956, the Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish motorship Stockholm in a dense fog ten miles off the coast of Nantucket. Although the rescue of the ship's passengers and crew was accomplished by many nearby vessels, including the Ile de France, the Doria sank ten hours later in 250 feet of water. She has since come to be known as "the Mount Everest of shipwrecks." Kevin McMurray has written a meticulous and fascinating history of the expeditions by highly skilled divers who literally risk death to visit the dangerous, rapidly deteriorating wreck. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves
