Our Little Library by Tabitha Paige is a lovely set of 5 books that is a rare find among the plentiful choices for this age group. Durable bindings and pages coupled with sweet hand-painted images featuring first words proven to build vocabulary in the very young. Each book ends with an activity to help a child continue their language development journey. ~ Reviewed by Jessica Wood
My other favorite Margaret Wise Brown storybook (see Little Fur Family) and the unequivocal best Golden Book of all time, Color Kittens is one of the books I never mind rereading to my kids endlessly. With the incredibly beautiful poetic storytelling you'd expect from a master, (Brown was heavily influenced by Gertrude Stein's writing style and it's really apparent here), and excellent painted visuals, bringing the reader through the different color-mixing experiments of the two scamps, Brush and Hush. It's an absolute joy to experience this calm and beautiful work again and again. ~ Reviewed by Reilly Hadden
Margaret Wise Brown is a legend and her collaboration here with Garth Williams is so perfectly beautiful and strange. I've probably read this book out loud a thousand times and I never once got sick of it. Even the ridiculously weird song at the end. My favorite picture book. Maybe my favorite book ever. "...and just as the darkness got very dark..." So good! ~ Reviewed by Reilly Hadden
This incredible little story feels like an unearthed Margaret Wise Brown classic. In what seems to be a direct homage to The Little Fur Family (one of my all-time favorites) this board book introduces us to the Littlest Family as they move into their "warm wooden tree" and then go for a pleasant and slightly perilous walk. With its beautiful illustrations and quiet, thoughtful language, this is one of those rare books that I don't mind reading over and over again to my demanding toddler. ~ Reviewed by Reilly Hadden
