A persuasive argument for a natural, holistic approach to agriculture using Fukuoka's own philosophy and practical experience. Though a scientist by training, Fukuoka is critical of the reductionist view and instead embraces the interconnectedness of all things, seeing his fields and orchards as the complex, semi-wild ecosystems they are. Every farmer should have this little book in his or her library, and all who eat should meet this vital perspective on food. ~ Reviewed by Julietta Cole

Compelling and well researched, Factory Man is the story of one man's battle against globalization and the outsourcing of American jobs. John Bassett III, a third generation furniture maker is not without faults but the love of his country, his business and the people who worked for him and made him rich was strong enough to sustain him in this big fight to keep his factories humming on American soil. Barbor's book is an epistle. The book reads eloquently, despite horrifying stats, it is refreshing, often humorous.Simply, we have lost the taste for good food because taste has been "engineered out"; of soil and sea. He proposes an ecocentric model. I love this book for it's eloquence and texture; you retain the information good stories and recipes. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

This is epic — in scale and breadth of topics. This book is a clear-eyed and well-written account of the current state of the earth and the rapid rate of extinction for many species, including the royal "we" of humanity. Many people may find this book frightening or disturbing, but I find it galvanizing, inspiring and hopeful — maybe not for the royal "we," but no matter: the earth has survived five major extinctions, and she will survive the next one as well. The 6th Extinction reads like a James Rollins or Michael Crichton novel. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan
