In this important book that synthesizes a lifetime project aimed at challenging conventional wisdom in consciousness studies, Damasio helps us reconcile two of the great conundrums in Western thought: 1. how we can understand human culture and mind as simultaneously unique yet ordinary in the grand scheme of evolution. and 2. how we can understand body and mind as fundamentally complimentary rather than dualistic.

Six Nonfiction Picks for People Who Don’t Think They Like Nonfiction

Textbooks don't usually top the list of fun reading. Most of us can recall the dry prose and formal style from our high school and/or college textbooks, but few of us recall them fondly. This is a tragedy. The world is an interesting place and a lot of really amazing things have happened (and continue to happen). Fortunately, not all nonfiction writing is textbook-dull. These six exciting titles will entertain as well as smarten you up. (Read More...)

A fascinating look at the pioneering work of parastilogists and the link between parasites and human/animal behavior. We like to think we are in control of our actions but we may be under the influence of a staggering number of wee invaders manipulating us for their own purposes. If you aren't already familiar with toxoplasma gondi you'll soon be deeply acquainted! ~ Reviewed by Nate George

This is a great read for people interested in science, particularly what has happened in the century since Einstein's theory of relativity was presented. It details the interesting, sometime odd, passionate and brilliant people who have worked to measure gravitational waves and, therefore, prove that black holes exist as theorized. Sounds much more dry that it is - Levin does a good job bringing the quest to life and explaining just enough science to make it interesting but not overwhelming to a layperson. The decades of hard work and experimentation that have gone into this effort are amazing and the scientists are characters. Good read! ~ Reviewed by Chris Morrow

Philosopher of science, James Owen Weatherall discusses the true nature of empty space (if there really is such a thing). He goes over the history of ideas people have about the way space and time is measured and how with every major discovery in physics from classical conceptions to quantum mechanics, the idea of what nothing is or isn't radically changes. If you are a person curious about the fundamental nature of reality, this is a great book to pick up. ~ Reviewed by Chris Van Natten
