John Carter Has Mad Hops

After two hours-plus of the uncomplicated but still head-scratching Martian space opera, John Carter, I had to ask my 13 year old son, "Did you get all that?" Yes. Of course, he did. The Therns are such and such. The Tharks act this way because. And I'm still thinking about the Ninth Ray but not very hard. For me, and I suspect many others, this film was about an Earth guy who can jump extremely high on Mars. The reason is never explained but only wondered about aloud. Something about bone density in combination with, I could only assume, the different atmosphere which had no other effect on John Carter other than the jumping. If one were really curious about this screwy but entertaining tale, one should go to the source--Edgar Rice Burroughs', A Princess of Mars.  (READ MORE)

This is a marvelous anecdotal treatise on freak (or rogue)ocean waves. While I didn't think I would enjoy this very much, I found myself enthralled by the topic and how it is presented. After the introduction, Ms. Casey follows around a group of diehard surfers who only surf giant waves of 60 feet or more. Laird Hamilton, who seems to be King of the Surfers, is a fascinating man hellbent on surfing a 100 foot wave - something that, until a few years ago, scientists didn't think existed. After this section of the book, the author attends a symposium on wave theory, in which we find out that, despite a great deal of scientific jargon, scientists really don't know a damn thing about waves. This is a very well written and researched book on an enthralling topic. ~ Reviewed by Erik Barnum
