On the left-hand pages is the Tao Te Ching as translated by James Legge in 1891 (the first English translation) and on the right-hand pages are corresponding sentences, phrases, and lines from Ralph Waldo Emerson arranged by the editor to illustrate the philosophical similarities between these two men whose lives were separated by thousands of years. What makes this even more fascinating is that this translation was completed after Emerson's death. Grossman posits -- convincingly so -- that Emerson's philosophies are an American Tao which he developed using his own methods of self-reliance. A wonderful and inspiring book. (On a side note, President Obama has consistently cited Emerson's "Self-Reliance" as one of his favorite pieces of writing.)

This reviewer is one of those who feel that the Authorized King James translation of the Bible is the standard against which all other translations are to be judged (and usually found wanting). This paperback edition includes a fine introduction, decent maps, good notes and a helpful glossary. The great advantage of this edition over many another is the inclusion of the Apocrypha, that group of texts that didn't make the "final cut" when the canons of both testaments were being finalized late in antiquity; these writings, which give the impression of existing in a sort of theological no-man's-land between Judaism and Christianity, make interesting reading, especially the seriocomic Book Of Tobit, the melodramatic Book of Judith, and the rambling proverb-ridden Eccclesiasticus. Here's a paperback Bible for the student and the general reader alike.

If the desert monks of antiquity have anything to say to us today, it is (according to Kathleen Norris) a single word, "acedia", inadequately known these days as boredom, ennui, depression, all of which are encompassed and surpassed in that ancient word: ACEDIA, the insidious collapse of will and spirit, the monks' "noonday demon". Perceiving acedia at large as a destructive agent in contemporary western societies, Norris has written a provocative and deeply personal introduction to an almost-forgotten disorder: it's not just back-- it was never gone...

A new book by Frederick Buechner is always eagerly awaited, and this definitive collection of his sermons challenges us as to what it means to be human and how God is revealed in everyday life. Buechner started his preaching life at Phillips Exeter Academy in 1959, and though he never again had his own pulpit, over the years he was asked to preach in places as varied as the little church in Rupert, Vermont to the National Cathedral in Washington. In this remarkable collection, one is struck once again by the compassion and wisdom of this extraordinary writer. ~ Reviewed by Barbara Morrow
