Absorbing and accessible, this is a great explanation of the latest advances in the field of brain/mind issues. Eagleman uses the phrase "team of rivals" (coined by Doris Kearns Goodwin) to describe, for the scientifically ignorant, just what researchers think is going on! It is comforting to know there are still way more questions than answers, yet I felt newly enlightened. ~ Reviewed by Karen Frank

A terrifically fun read about a man who, while researching an article about the U.S. Memory Championships, decides to take up the challenge when a contestant tells him that even he could learn how to have an amazing memory. A year later, the author is a finalist in the competition himself. A humorous and enlightening look at memory from ancient times to the cutting edge research that is going on today. Highly recommended ~ Reviewed by Erik Barnum

Hands down my most favorite book of the year. The function of the human mind is an endless source of fascination, in my book, and this book takes the reader to concepts contrary to common thinking through the ages. His research suggests that our decisions are barely influenced by the part of our thinking brain of which we are aware. He brings into question the whole notion of culpability. Not to suggest that people should "get away" with anti-social behavior but that we should reconsider the consequences we impose on those who "misbehave." A mind-blowing assessment of who's really in our drivers' seats. ~ Reviewed by Heather Bellanca
