A master at revealing the subtle beauties of the everyday, former poet laureate Ted Kooser has that rare ability to distill a lifetime into a scene, an image, a fleeting exchange between two people. Quiet but resonant, these poems defy forgetfulness.

This is a powerful collection of poems. Sanchez's voice is the voice of the blues. The poems are all at once deeply spiritual, moving, and politically hopeful. Sanchez moves freely in these poems from haiku, to tanka, to free verse, to prose poem. She really does it all. Her words have a stripped down, honest, brutal feeling, yet paint powerful and beautiful images. This book did shake me. I had to read it a little at a time to savor its intensity.

I don't really like much poetry. I generally come away from a poem by some well-known poet thinking, 'Now what makes that a poem?' However, I do like The Ink Dark Moon. It's a collection of short love poems and aubades by medieval Japanese women. In each poem a simple image elegantly evokes an intense emotion. That's all I need.

Grace Paley describes herself as a "combative pacifist and cooperative anarchist." Though Begin Againdoes contain some new poems, it could well be described as an excellent retospective of this seasoned poet. A teacher, activist, and National Book Award-winning master of the short story, Paley fashions poems about milkweed pods, Saint John's wort, bees, and ants, as well as poems about El Salvador, Vietnam, and AIDS. War, capitalism, sanitary napkins, old age, and old dogs...no detail is too large or too small. Whether she's writing about New York City or her adopted rural Vermont, Paley speaks with the power of a rebel angel.

I discovered David Budbill when I read an article that he had written for the Utne Reader which discussed the value of the hermit as political activist. Budbill lives a reclusive life on "Judevine Mountain" in Vermont. I was drawn to this article because I myself had recently decided to flee city life and head for Vermont. His incredibly well-crafted, intelligent, and wry article totally convinced me that I was headed in the right direction. I read his poetry later when I heard he was coming to read at the bookstore. Budbill's wise, witty poems reverberate with the power of ancient Chinese poets, yet this ancient wisdom is turned pointedly and uniquely at human nature and modern culture. One can't help chuckling and feeling refreshed when reading his poetry.

Saul Williams combines the rhythm and texture of the spoken word/hip-hop tradition with striking imagery and powerful prose. The poems in She are relentlessly self-exposing, flow with an almost dream-like quality, and at times feel conversational. Each time I read this book I discover something new. This is why it's one of my favorite books.
