Hardy is one of the few poets in the English language to gain acclaim as both a novelist and a poet. His poetry is filled with a longing for hope and beauty within his seemingly desolate post-Enlightenment society. This wonderful collection of his poems is a must have for any poetry enthusiast!

Dean Young is the master of the "American Surreal" school of poetry. This latest volume is a fine addition to his oeuvre. Poems like "Look at Quintillions Ripen'd & Look at Quintillions Green," "Poem on a Theme by Tony Hoagland" (a friend of Young's and another poet of high comic intent worth checking out), "Pelt" (a political poem if there ever was one), and "The Pure Intention of the Hornet," will only add to the admiration that Young has garnered through the past decade for his humorous and humane poetry.

Morgan Lucas Schuldt's debut volume of poetry will appeal to lovers of poets as diverse and disparate as Hart Crane, E.E. Cummings, Robert Creeley, Stephane Mallarme, and Harryette Mullen. He uses his slippery syntax and flexible lexicon to conjure up a collection of fast moving poems that owe as much to hip-hop as they do to Gerard Manley Hopkins. There are a number of ekphrastic poems that pay homage to painters like Hieronymus Bosch and Francis Bacon as well. Schuldt is one of the bright lights in the poetry world, a member of a generation of young poets who are rewriting (as every generation should) what poetry can be.

When narrative poetry fails, it's often because it focuses too much on the "narrative" and not enough on the "poetry." Steve Scafidi avoids this pitfall entirely in his second collection. He pays homage to the "old, weird America" in "Habits of the North American Sasquatch," to women and motherhood in "Witness to the Work," and to that all-American response to critique in "Ode to the Middle Finger." You'd never guess Scafidi is a cabinet-maker in West Virginia. Then again, what better job could a poet have . . .

Harryette Mullen straddles the worlds of L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets and the hip-hop crowd. She has amazing dexterity when fooling with words. I first fell in love with her work when I encountered Muse & Drudge as a graduate student at the Bennington Writing Seminars and have been hooked ever since. While "doing away" with meaning, she nevertheless creates new meanings as her lines and sentences pile up, accumulating in your mind. Graywolf has thankfully published this volume which collects three of her out-of-print books and puts them together between two covers.
