Jill Alexander Essbaum writes with the formal precision of an Elizabethan poet but her subject matter leans more toward Marguerite Duras, Anais Nin, or even Annie Sprinkle! Filled with puns, innuendo, and eroticism, these poems aren't for the faint -- but they may make you do just that!

Bidart -- winner of the 2007 Bollingen Prize -- is one of the most unique voices in American literature. His latest collection contains one longish poem ("Ulanova at Forty-Six At Last Dances Before a Camera Giselle") but is devoid of such epics as "The Third Hour of the Night," (from his previous collection Star Dust.) It does however contain some of his most beautiful and provacotive shorter lyrics to date. Stand-outs include "An American in Hollywood," "To the Republic," "God's Catastrophe in Our Time," and "Hymn." If you're unfamiliar with Bidart's poetry Watching the Spring Festival will prove to be an excellent introduction.

Full of both naivete and wisdom, these prosey fragments have a charm unparalleled. Brainard recounts seemingly everybody's childhood in paragraphs that begin "I remember . . ." An icon of the Pop Art world, Brainard was friends with the New York School of poets (check out his illustrations in John Ashbery's The Vermont Notebook). This phrase is overused, but in this case it's true: I Remember is truly a gem!

The most recent collection from UVM professor Huddle is surreally funny and unbearably touching. Whether it's the outrageous long poem "The Cosmetic Surgeon Comes to Glory River" or the arresting "In the Boston Children's Hospital," Huddle will make you laugh after you're done crying.

Much like Sylvia Plath or Edgar Allan Poe, Cole's poetry is drenched in the occult of the everyday. These poems confront grief and rage head on, whether directed toward memory ("Mimosa Sensitiva") or reality ("To the Forty-third President.") This Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet (for Middle Earth) has a truly fascinating voice, one that borders the mystical baroque but is thoroughly contemporary.

This is an excellent all-encompassing anthology edited by two masters of the art form. Arranged alphabetically by title, the poems range from anonymous Medieval ballads to work from 20th-century poets like Elizabeth Bishop and William Stafford. If you're looking for an affordable good poetry anthology, you'd be hard-pressed to do better than this one.
