The young girl of the story, Leila, has emotions running all over the map about her mother’s illness. This causes her to not feel like doing anything. Not even share in class. She is feeling angry, sadness, confusion and more over the situation. She is not really able to understand why her mother is in the hospital. Why her mother has missed Leila’s presentation for class. And why an accidentally spilled glass at dinner makes her start sobbing uncontrollably. It is not until Leila’s father says it is time to start making some happy in their lives, that the fun is able to come about, and they can slowly fall back into, not normal, but good again. Based on the author's own experiences with their children, the text is complemented by the artwork of Khoa Le. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

She is smart, she is clever, she has ideas! Shirley, when she's left in charge of the family store, has the best idea ever: if you purchase anything, you receive a surprise. That surprise is the gefilte fish the family cannot sell. But of course since the register does not see profits, the family does not think it was a good idea. Or was it? A fantastic story of family, community and having the ingenuity to take a chance on something (and the someones) you love. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

Two of the very best cartoonists of our day have united to create this ridiculously beautiful and funny picture book. On a walk to the park, Molly's mothers are interrupted by a neighboring family and an onslaught of small talk ensues. Molly must grapple with the agonizing experience of waiting for one's parents and the realization that having a good imagination is the solution. A really relatable, hilarious book with stunning watercolor illustrations. My new fave. ~ Reviewed by Reilly Hadden

The story starts off with an innocent drawing by a school friend, has our narrator questioning how people see him, and how he sees himself. The picture looks nothing like him. But through the love, interactions between him and his family, and his own thoughts and feelings, our young narrator learns how his eyes can tell many stories of his past, present, and the future. And how he can speak to the stars. Gorgeously illustrated in rich tones and details. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette

I adore this book and have spent hours reading it to my daughter over the years. Full of breathtaking illustrations of nature alongside calm, poetic writing. An animal fable about greed and possessiveness, the whole forest is entranced by a mystical golden leaf, and in their obsession with it, they destroy it. A book about appreciating what we already have in the world. Relax with a cup of tea and read this to your kid, there's basically nothing better. ~ Reviewed by Reilly Hadden
