When you have a hobby, you know it can sometimes get out of hand. And Hana’s hobby is fashion! It is making hijabs sparkle and shine with the goodies she finds in her grandmother’s jewelry box and things found at her aunt’s hair salon. But things are getting out of control and are taking over nooks and crannies she did not know the family home had! When she learns about a way to share her talents, and learn a few problem-solving techniques along the way, Hana’s world (and those of her friends, family, and community) is a lot brighter. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette
The young girl of the story, Leila, has emotions running all over the map about her mother’s illness. This causes her to not feel like doing anything. Not even share in class. She is feeling angry, sadness, confusion and more over the situation. She is not really able to understand why her mother is in the hospital. Why her mother has missed Leila’s presentation for class. And why an accidentally spilled glass at dinner makes her start sobbing uncontrollably. It is not until Leila’s father says it is time to start making some happy in their lives, that the fun is able to come about, and they can slowly fall back into, not normal, but good again. Based on the author's own experiences with their children, the text is complemented by the artwork of Khoa Le. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette
She is smart, she is clever, she has ideas! Shirley, when she's left in charge of the family store, has the best idea ever: if you purchase anything, you receive a surprise. That surprise is the gefilte fish the family cannot sell. But of course since the register does not see profits, the family does not think it was a good idea. Or was it? A fantastic story of family, community and having the ingenuity to take a chance on something (and the someones) you love. ~ Reviewed by Jeanette
Two of the very best cartoonists of our day have united to create this ridiculously beautiful and funny picture book. On a walk to the park, Molly's mothers are interrupted by a neighboring family and an onslaught of small talk ensues. Molly must grapple with the agonizing experience of waiting for one's parents and the realization that having a good imagination is the solution. A really relatable, hilarious book with stunning watercolor illustrations. My new fave. ~ Reviewed by Reilly Hadden
With a hilarious story and charming art that brings its whimsical world to life, this book is one that both children and adults will love. Easily one of my favorite picture books within the last decade. ~ Reviewed by Claire Bennet
