American Bloomsbury: Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau: Their Lives, Their Loves, Their Work by Susan Cheever - Book Review

After finishing the new novel, Finding Margaret Fuller by Allison Pataki, I was immediately drawn to American Bloomsbury. While Pataki's novel is a fictionalized account of Fuller's life, Cheever's book gives the reader a brief biographical overview of the intertwined lives of those giants of America literature: Emerson, Hawthorne, Thoreau, Alcott, and of course, Fuller. I found this book totally engaging, leaving me eager to revisit the pages of literary classics like The Scarlet Letter, House of Seven Gables and Little Women. I may follow Susan Cheever's lead and take a road trip to Concord to walk the neighborhoods that once housed these brilliant figures of American literature and philosophy! ~ Reviewed by Lauren Singer

Representation matters and this quick and easy read offers a compelling insight into representing our unseen neighbors. Worth the moment it takes to have a deeper understanding of those whose lives continue to support our own, without the common advantages of citizenship. With great art and an honest voice, it’s a moving portrayal of Vermont’s migrant workers. ~ Reviewed by Jennifer Langstaff-French

Most people would consider Tony Costa a monster. Norman Mailer and Kurt Vonnegut both saw him as an opportunity. Costa was a charismatic manipulator, who sustained his jumbled life by selling drugs and serving as a paid informer for the local police in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He emerged as the chief suspect in a series of grisly murders of young women, whose dismembered bodies were discovered in an isolated section of woods on Cape Cod. Mailer was haunted by the idea that Costa's cult-like followers would harm his family after he showed an interest in writing about the case. Vonnegut, also a Provincetown resident, was finally beginning to enjoy success and believed that the brutal killings would make a compelling follow-up to "Slaughterhouse-Five." "Hell Town" is an unsparing trek into the mind of a twisted, merciless killer and the efforts by two literary giants to venture down a dark and dangerous path and enter into it. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves
