Desert Notebooks is a unique blend of cultural essays, drawing on literature going back to the ancients and walks around Las Vegas, interwoven with natural world explorations. It is sequential entries into a journal, sort of, with meanderings into owls, the origins and nature of time and the progression of climate change. In the end, it is Ehrenreich's writing which wins the day in this fascinating, meditative, sad and Covid appropriate delving into life on planet earth right now. Highly recommended. ~ Reviewed by Chris Morrow

This book will have you laughing out loud! Mortimer introduces us to the many varied, and often eccentric, characters who make bees a part of their everyday lives, in the most readable, and delightful way. Not a how-to, but much more of a why, in regard to beekeeping, rich in history, science and anecdotes. For anyone curious about bees, this book is a must read. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

I devoured this in a couple of days, it was such a compassionate and compelling read. Harkness’ most recent breakdown, after many years of anxiety and depression, led him to nature, and most specifically the observation of birds. Medications and more traditional routes to recovery were just not working, and yet, the most simple of ways, to immerse oneself in nature seemed to be the way for Harkness to find a respite, and more importantly, a path to healing. This book delights in the beauty of nature, the importance of slowing oneself down and making those minute observations that give us connection with our world. I highly recommend this to all. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

“For even if we don't believe in miracles, they are there, and they are waiting for us to find them.”
Macdonald’s essays in this book are as much like miracles as the subjects she writes about. With writing so beautiful and observations so keen, this is a book to be savored, and I know I’ll be dipping in and out of it for years to come, a true treasure. I cannot wait to recommend this book to all those curious about the natural world. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty
