An exquisitely beautiful, poetic book that explores the connection between human and nature. In this case, specifically the ancient oak tree. Canton asks what it is that makes our bond with the ancient woodland such a special one; is it the history they are imbued with; is it being in counsel with an ancient being; or is it the hormonal response to being with the tree that naturally calms us; or is it all of those things. Keep this one by your bedside to dip in and out of, just tremendous! ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

Have you found that new perfect read yet? If you love Robert MacFarlane, Kimmerer or The Hidden Life of Trees check this beautiful book out . The Oak Papers by James Canton is so wonderful I can't bring myself to finish it. Open to any page and you might find science, history, folklore all wrapped up in a meditative journal that Canton kept for over a year visiting (weekly) one of the oldest recorded oak trees in Britain, a tree that was sturdy young sapling at the time of the Magna Carta. This is a book to keep and savour. ~ Reviewed by Maeve Noonan

I was completely captivated by Ash’s stunning writing, and the tremendous sense of place it gave me. When Ash moves to Cornwall from London, she explores the traditions and lives of the fishing community that has shaped this part of the world, discovering the ways, and struggles, they keep this industry and way of life alive. Ash begins to take rides on several different fishing vessels, and explores the uniqueness of them, and also the mindset and comradery of the men that work on them. This book is a tremendous body of research and insight into a way of life that may be in its twilight years. Excellent. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty

“Ghostways holds a hagstone up to landscape, and shows the skulls beneath its skin.”
A stunning work in two halves.
Ness reads like an epic narrative poem of old, looking through time at a place's past lives, as nature claims it back.
Holloway follows one of the old paths of Britain, a part of landscape trodden into a groove by centuries of use, and the feeling of stepping back in time it evokes.
These two tales are poetic and evocative, and this is only heightened by the amazing artwork of Stanley Donwood. A gem. ~ Reviewed by Becky Doherty
