Thrilling, disturbing, and an incredible debut novel from The Killing writer and creator Søren Sveistrup. Set in Copenhagen, a murder spree begins when a young mother is found murdered nearby her home with her hand amputated off, and two other murders follow soon after. The murderer leaves a small chestnut man at every crime scene, each with the fingerprint belonging to a young girl who went missing--and presumed dead--a year ago. The case is in the hands of an unlikely pair; Naia Thulin, a single mother with a fading interest in Major Crimes, and Mike Hess, a Europol agent who has been temporarily suspended from his agency and reassigned to homicide for the time being. As the mystery unfolds, each piece of the puzzle that seemed unlikely to connect weaved their way together to create a thrilling, heart-pumping climax as the killer and their intentions are revealed. Sveistrup elegantly jumps from gory murder to politics to the inner lives of our protagonists, and by the time I reached the last chapter I was eager for the story to continue. At first I struggled to stay engaged with the police-procedural styled plot, but once the plot kicked in and we got to learn more about Thulin and Hess, their chemistry together and their determination to find the truth behind this wild murder spree, I was all-in. I truly hope that Sveistrup is looking to do a sequel that pairs these detectives together again. This is a great read for someone who is a fan of the “Nordic Noir” thriller style, but this book is definitely not meant for the light-hearted. The sixth installment of the Slough House series shows that Herron is still on top of his game. Jackson Lamb's bureau of misfit agents are reeling from the slaughter of their colleagues and a new recruit who may possibly be a psychopath. Then their nemesis makes an untimely reappearance. The chase is on, and it soon becomes clear that the hunted may very well be the hunter. Thanks to Herron's garrote-tight plotting and kill-the-hostages sense of humor, the tension is only relieved by the reader's laughter. Another winner. ~ Reviewed by Charles Bottomley

After using his partner's body as a human shield, Copenhagen homicide detective Carl Morck is assigned to deal with cases that aren't so much cold as in deep freeze. With the surprisingly resourceful help-meet Assad, the two-man department investigate a Danish politician who boarded a ferry and was never seen again. Once Adler-Olsen's pieces are in place, take a sick day, because the first novel in his Department Q series is nigh unstoppable. A satisfyingly complex mystery that's a cut above the usual Scandinavian fare (and not too grisly). ~ Reviewed by Charles Bottomley

Goddamn, this is a great spy series. Slough House is where disgraced MI6 agents go to be ignored until they die. Led by the corpulent and incorrigible spymaster (and utter bastard) Jackson Lamb, however, international mischief ends up abounding. The death of a Cold War relic leads to the discovery of a sleeper cell that has been slumbering for longer than most spies can remember. What does this have to do with the arrival in London of a mysterious Russian oligarch? Herron's plotting keeps the reader guessing until the knuckles goes white, but ultimately it's his characters who win the day. The screw-ups of Slough House might not be the spooks you want to raise a pint with, but they are as entertaining a crew as thrillers have to offer. ~ Reviewed by Charles Bottomley

Nothing Can Hurt You is a propulsive thriller that has “Netflix limited series” written all over it. Based on a true story, this tangled web of murder, revenge, resignation, and intrigue is a winner. Each chapter presents new wrinkles and insights into the aftermath of a small-town murder that has echoed across decades. ~ Reviewed by Chris Linendoll

The latest from an author that has become a favorite of mine. What starts as a simple, and rare, family vacation for the British detective couple morphs into a fatal accident that leads to murder. Set in idyllic Cotswolds with its gorgeous countryside replete with sheep and border collies, local pubs, amazing food and libations. The author has developed multiple storylines and points of view in the story which I never felt confused by, only intrigued. Marvelous storytelling, deep and complex characters. You will be absorbed in the story to the very end. ~ Reviewed by Tambra Johnson Reap
