Lo Blacklock is an up-and-coming travel journalist who has been assigned the story of a lifetime; a week on the luxury cruise-ship The Aurora with a handful of other guests to travel across the North Sea. But what was meant to be a week in paradise and the story that would skyrocket Lo’s career ends up becoming a dark voyage filled with paranoia and murderous plots.
This novel has the perfect backdrop for a suspenseful murder mystery; a fancy boat surrounded by fancy people, with a paranoid narrator. I’ll admit, Lo’s character was hard to connect with at first, but by the time I reached the middle of the story I was all in and was rooting for Lo to survive the hell she was put through, just for trying to do the right thing. I was half-right guessing who was behind the murder but the plot twist still shocked me.
Overall, there were some issues I had with pacing and some of the side characters not being fleshed out, but this was a great read. I can’t wait to explore more of Ruth Ware’s stories! ~ Reviewed by Kirsten Swartz

Archer Mayor's 30th Joe Gunther mystery surprises the reader by introducing a reporter for the local newspaper and a private detective. Both are spunky women who aid the investigation. Not being police, the two can investigate in ways police can't. How do the murders of a small time drug dealer and a thief fit in with mysterious goings on at a prep school? The interactions between the women investigators and police in solving the crimes make for an enjoyable read. ~ Reviewed by Sarah Knight

What can I say? I LOVED this book and did not want it to end. Somewhat Dickensian in flavor, it is the story of a female detective Bridie Devine and her search for a missing child who may, or may not, have unusual powers. Through the author’s incredibly lyrical and vivid prose, the reader will travel through Victorian London’s dark underbelly, searching for the child amongst body-snatching resurrectionists, amoral anatomical curiosity collectors (hence “Things in Jars”) and nefarious surgeons. She is aided among others by a devoted 7 foot tall lady’s maid and a mysterious tattooed, melancholic and lovelorn ghost named Ruby Doyle who is never far from Bridie’s side and whom only Bridie can see and whom I fell in love with myself. This novel is a joy to read and one you will long think of after you have finished. ~ Reviewed by Tambra Johnson Reap

Although purely fiction, this fascinating, often frightening, mystery made me contemplate the actual possibility of ghosts. The author seamlessly interweaves the paranormal with the “normal” in this mystery of disappearance and possible murder of several girls in and around a run-down motel in a small town in upstate NY. Switching between 1982 and 2017, the story follows a young girl investigating the disappearance 35 years earlier of her aunt by following in her footsteps. From the first chapter, the reader will be completely engrossed in this haunting, creepy, and entirely absorbing mystery. ~ Reviewed by Tambra Johnson Reap

Thrilling, disturbing, and an incredible debut novel from The Killing writer and creator Søren Sveistrup. Set in Copenhagen, a murder spree begins when a young mother is found murdered nearby her home with her hand amputated off, and two other murders follow soon after. The murderer leaves a small chestnut man at every crime scene, each with the fingerprint belonging to a young girl who went missing--and presumed dead--a year ago. The case is in the hands of an unlikely pair; Naia Thulin, a single mother with a fading interest in Major Crimes, and Mike Hess, a Europol agent who has been temporarily suspended from his agency and reassigned to homicide for the time being. As the mystery unfolds, each piece of the puzzle that seemed unlikely to connect weaved their way together to create a thrilling, heart-pumping climax as the killer and their intentions are revealed. Sveistrup elegantly jumps from gory murder to politics to the inner lives of our protagonists, and by the time I reached the last chapter I was eager for the story to continue. At first I struggled to stay engaged with the police-procedural styled plot, but once the plot kicked in and we got to learn more about Thulin and Hess, their chemistry together and their determination to find the truth behind this wild murder spree, I was all-in. I truly hope that Sveistrup is looking to do a sequel that pairs these detectives together again. This is a great read for someone who is a fan of the “Nordic Noir” thriller style, but this book is definitely not meant for the light-hearted. Be prepared for some graphic content! ~ Reviewed by Kirstin Swartz

The sixth installment of the Slough House series shows that Herron is still on top of his game. Jackson Lamb's bureau of misfit agents are reeling from the slaughter of their colleagues and a new recruit who may possibly be a psychopath. Then their nemesis makes an untimely reappearance. The chase is on, and it soon becomes clear that the hunted may very well be the hunter. Thanks to Herron's garrote-tight plotting and kill-the-hostages sense of humor, the tension is only relieved by the reader's laughter. Another winner. ~ Reviewed by Charles Bottomley
