Movies For the Ages

As a follow up to our earlier “Desert Island Disc” staff project, Northshire staffers recently put together a list of their all time favorite movies. For some reason I can't quite put my finger on, as much as I enjoyed the prior project and love music without equal, there was something even more magical about watching this list of cinematic favorites come together.

God, is it time for them again?

I understand that the Grammy Awards drew a bigger television audience this year than the Oscar presentations. The explanation, offered no doubt with a fair helping of sour grapes, was that Whitney Houston’s sudden passing spiked an interest in the Grammys. I hope there is no truth to the rumor that the Academy is scheduling next year’s ceremony to coincide with a big star’s death. It sounds ghoulish and very tentative. The show is bad enough when it’s carefully planned.

Someone asked me if I watched the Oscars and, like most self-styled movie snobs, I reacted as if they had wondered if I went in for bungee jumping. I have a lot of trouble giving validity to an organization that actually believes that The Apartment is a better film than Psycho or that a stodgy antique like The English Patient was preferable to a movie as vital and influential as Fargo.

And Forrest Gump, of course, was the coup de grace.

“No,” I answered, “I watched The Lady Eve instead. I did see Angelina Jolie’s leg flashing. If that was a highlight, I guess I didn’t miss much.” Pretty civil, don’t you think?. (READ MORE)
