As a professional eye-roller, things like meditation, psychoanalysis, and most other quasi-spiritual endeavors are beyond me. Dan Harris felt the same way.
After experiencing a very public anxiety attack, he sought ways to "tame the voice in his head" and just generally learn how to appreciate life. Run-ins with TV gurus such as Eckhart Tolle and Deepak Chopra brought equal parts revelation and frustration for the author, who sought a more "real world" approach to being a happier person.
Part memoir, part intro-to-Buddhism and other Eastern philosophies, Harris breaks down the mumbo-jumbo and gets real about how he's come to face his anxiety head-on and be 10% Happier in the process. ~ Reviewed by Chris Linendoll

Hepola first tasted beer at seven, got drunk at twelve, and fueled a love affair with alcohol that lasted through her thirties. Alcohol made her feel funnier, fiercer, freer, and like a better writer. It comforted her until its magic faded. Blackouts swallowed whole swathes of her memory. Hepola's strength is in not presenting her sobriety as a simple moral awakening. With her sharp and darkly funny prose, she tells an electric story of loving booze and relearning how to be awake and alive without it. One of my favorite books of the past year. ~ Reviewed by Cathy Taylor

I haven't read Eat, Pray, Love (or anything else by Gilbert), so I was exactly sure what to expect. I absolutely loved this book. Gilbert is witty, smart, funny and overall has such a likable presence with her words. Her anecdotes are well placed and well said, with the tone of the book offering up a real feeling of "you can do it." I feel genuinely inspired after reading this book and I wasn't even looking for inspiration. While it's geared towards people who are more creative (in the traditional sense) I recommend this book to anyone; whether they are looking for inspiration or not, whether they're pursuing a creative path or not, Big Magic is simply a great read for all. ~ Reviewed by Misha D'Andrea
