A monsterless and subtly different kind of excursion into the blacker (and bleaker) side of life. Comprised of four stories, each one of them concerned with the duplicitous nature of the human psyche. The individual tales are all graphic, chilling, and, even Mr. King admits, unpleasant, but just try to put the book down when you get caught up in one of them. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves

Matheson was one of the writers that fueled my early reading life. He is underrated and overlooked because of the genre in which he plied his craft. Yet many of today's writer's owe him a great deal, and that is what this book is about. Those writers paying their debt to the master. This collection is loaded with prequels, sequels, and stories inspired by Richard Matheson - including the first ever collaboration between Stephen King and his son, Joe Hill. Do you need to go back and read Richard Matheson's works? Not really, but it will enhance these stories and reading Matheson is always a pleasure. ~ Reviewed by Erik Barnum

Stephen King's best novel in a long time is set in a small Maine town named Chester's Mill. Like many places, Chester's Mill is home to a school of small town big fish. The biggest is Second Selectman Jim Rennie. Smoother than the butter that now clogs the arteries in his portly bulk, Big Jim is not a man to be trifled with. If he had to abide grudgingly by the rules that govern most civilized behavior before a lovely autumn day when an impenetrable dome settled over Chester's Mill, he doesn't see any particular reason for doing so afterward. No one can get in and no one can get out. And no one knows why. After wreaking havoc on a small plane, a few vehicles, many unfortunate birds, and a fair number of local noses, the dome begins to function as a kind of greenhouse for human emotions, bringing out the best in some and the worst in Big Jim, his ne'er-do-well son, Junior, and the motley crew of local thugs that they assemble to enforce their will. As the days wear on with no hope forthcoming from the outside world, Chester's Mill begins its transformation from peaceful town to armed battleground. King's book is rich in potent contemporary metaphors about the flagrant abuse of power. His many characters are expertly fleshed out and the narrative forges ahead like a runaway train. This is a big book in every sense of the word. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves

Ms. Rice forsakes vampires for angels in this tale of redemption and forgiveness. Toby O'Dare is a hit man who, despite his proficiency in his chosen field and the wealth that it has brought him, is beginning to feel that something fundamentally vital to most people is missing in his life. Burdened with a suffocating guilt from his youth, he has deadened his emotions and does the murderous bidding of a man he knows only from telephone conversations. The hope that his soul is not lost for all eternity is reawakened when he is visited by an angel who shows him how he might be saved. Original, solid storytelling. Rice walks a perilous trail when she tackles angels, time travel, and ultimate redemption, but she never looses her sure footing. ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves
