Ketchum recounts one of the most famous-- although wrongly-named battles in American history. When the British decided to break out of Boston, Colonial spies discovered their plan. On the night of June 16, 1775, the rebels began fortifying Bunker Hill and digging a redoubt on Breed's Hill. Here the battle, which marked a point of no return for both England the colonies, actually took place. Ketchum's outstanding narrative tells the story in human, political and military terms. This is the story of the Second Vermont Brigade, formed to serve in the Civil War for only nine months. Shortly before their rather routine tour of duty ended, the men were sent to Gettysburg, where they were instrumental in repelling Pickett's charge. A compelling story of the Vermonters and their experiences, told largely through letters, diaries and memoirs. Illustrated. ~ Reviewed by Louise Jones

This moving story, set in and around colonial Deerfield, MA., won the National Book Award for history as well as the Francis Parkman and Ray Allen Billington history prizes. In 1704, a French and Indian war party attacked the settlement of Deerfield, killing many inhabitants and capturing a minister, John Williams, and his five children. Most of the Willams family was eventually released, but Eunice Willams chose to remain with her captors, even converting to Catholicism and marrying a Mohawk tribesman. Despite the Williams's attempts to convince her to return to her family, she refused. This outstanding book examines the cultural and religious barriers that separated most colonial peoples, and the tumult caused by those who crossed them. ~ Reviewed by Louise Jones
