I've finally digested this work in 2020, five years after its publication. It will never be too late to read this one. The vitality of the message shows no signs of fading and though the truth is hard to swallow, it would be remarkable for anyone to finish this testimonial and remain unchanged. Coates gives us an intimate portrait of the human cost of racism, the continuing inequities that many in our country unfairly maneuver right now, the threat of violence that stalks black men and boys every day, and the stark difference between black and white contemporary American life. A must read on every level and a powerful tool for a deeper understanding of what is at stake. ~ Reviewed by Nancy Scheemaker

Superb account of a political underdog. Derided by the press, written off by pollsters and members of his own party, and pitted against three opponents, Harry Truman's steadfast determination, effort, and optimism elevated him, on Election Day 1948, to a breathtaking triumph. ~ Reviewed by Mike Hare

If you are looking for a psychological and intelligent book that delves into the mindset of growing up as a Black individual in America, then this is the book for you. Meant to be read with a curious and open mind, Tatum beautifully explains how racism has been buried under the surface for many White Americans who were taught that indifference is safer than standing up against racism. Providing numerous insightful responses to questions about race, Tatum's classic book is not to be missed when learning how to be an anti-racist in today's world. ~ Reviewed by Laura Knapp

The author of the excellent Ghostland turns his critical eye towards the cryptids and legends of American history. Dickey presents the myths and facts with a clear, nonjudgmental tone, and digs deep into the many sources of inspiration that can often meld together to form a tall tale. Another hit from this author. ~ Reviewed by Chris Linendoll
